The knock echoed

In the summer of 2015, in a quiet corner of rural Pineville, a group of friends embarked on a week-long adventure in an old farmhouse that harbored secrets darker than they could have ever imagined.

Eighteen-year-old Alex traveled to Pineville, Louisiana, to visit his friend Kyle and his family. They had recently acquired a farmhouse in need of repair, a place that held a disturbing history. The previous owner had met a tragic end, having hung himself in the basement some six years prior. This basement, or more aptly described as a cellar, could only be accessed from outside the house, near the main entry. Adding to the house’s eerie past, it had endured a fire before the last owner took possession, a fire he never fully remedied.

The house itself was divided into two sections, separated by a long upstairs hallway. Along this corridor stood three rooms: Kyle’s room, a bathroom, and the infamous “burnt room.” At the hallway’s end lay a door leading to the second part of the house, a part so damaged by the previous fire that it remained largely untouched.

As the days passed, Kyle’s family regaled Alex with tales of the farmhouse’s dark history. Two families had once shared this dwelling, but one fateful night, a fire consumed the second section, claiming the lives of a husband, his wife, and their son. The burnt room in the hallway hid a macabre secret—a can of arsenic, with an eerie addition: a kitchen spoon lodged within it.

Alex dismissed the stories as urban legends, but soon, he would experience the inexplicable firsthand. One night, as Alex and Kyle readied themselves for bed, the strains of loud music filled the room. The sound was so deafening that they could hardly hear a sudden, thunderous knock on their bedroom door. Startled, they lowered the music and flung the door open, expecting to catch Kyle’s brother playing a prank. However, the hallway stood empty, an eerie chill settling in their bones. The knock echoed once more, a solitary sound in the oppressive silence. With trepidation, Alex and Kyle ventured into the hallway, finding the door to the burnt section wide open. Panic seized them as they raced downstairs, but Kyle’s dad dismissed their fear as childish antics.

Undeterred, the friends regrouped in Kyle’s room, resumed their music, and braced for the next encounter. It didn’t take long. The knock reverberated, followed by running footsteps, childish giggles, and a door slam echoing from the end of the hallway. Fear clenched their hearts, and they shared nervous glances, realizing that something beyond explanation lurked within those charred walls.

Determined to confront their fears, Alex, Kyle, and Kyle’s brother bunked together in the room the following night. In the stillness, they heard faint shuffling and rustling emanating from the burnt room, persisting for an unsettling twenty minutes. It was an experience that left them haunted by the inexplicable events of that old farmhouse in Pineville, Louisiana, forever etched in their memories.
